Picture Walk
Before reading the book to your class, we invite you to ask students their initial reactions to the illustrations.
Antes de leer el libro a tus estudiantes, te invitamos a preguntarles sobre sus primeras reacciones sobre las ilustraciones.

Suggested guiding questions:

  1. What emotions do you feel?  ¿Qué emociones sientes?
  2. What ideas do you have about the different masks in the illustrations? ¿Qué ideas tienes sobre los diferentes cubrebocas en las ilustraciones?
  3. What can/can't you see? ¿Qué puedes/ no puedes ver?

Quick Write
Ask students to jot down their initial thoughts about the book. This could be illustrations, words, phrases, etc. This activity helps students to makes sense of what they already know and will give the facilitator a better idea of where students are coming from.

Pide a tus estudiantes que escriban sus pensamientos iniciales sobre el libro. Esto puede ser a través de ilustraciones, palabras, frases, etc. Esta actividad ayudará a los estudiantes a entender los que ya saben y le dará una mejor idea al facilitador sobre el punto de partida de los estudiantes.


Vocabulary
Since this is a Spanish/English bilingual book, it is important to highlight that a "mask" or "cloth face covering" is translated differently depending on the region. Examples include:

Debido a que este es un libro bilingüe, es importante enfatizar que una "cubierta de tela" o "cubrebocas" puede tener diferentes traducciones dependiendo de la region. Algunos ejemplos son:

  • cubrebocas
  • tapabocas
  • mascara de tela
  • mascarilla

***Depending on your grade level you may need to introduce certain terms in the book.

Read Aloud
As you are reading the book, prompt students to identify specific emotions AND/or identities that they can connect to.

Make copies of the images here and distribute to students. We recommend that students engage in conversation in small groups first before working individually on their own pages.

For these upper grades we encourage you to think about these questions and prompts:

  1. Have students explore other emotions they are feeling...
  2. Which of the emotions do you identify with the most and why?
  3. Is there stigma about wearing masks in your community?
  4. Do some of us already wear masks that one can't see?
  5. What are other times and occasions when we have to wear masks?
  6. Have students create another page with another emotion, another mask and another text.
  7. Have students add more text to a specific emotions from the book (joy, sadness, anger, love, and hope)
  8. Have students do role plays around specific elements of the text.
  9. Consider adding a "poetry activity"  using the book as a prompt.


  1. Haga que los estudiantes exploren otras emociones que sienten... 
  2. ¿Con cuál de las emociones se identifica más y por qué? 
  3. ¿Existe un estigma sobre el uso de cubrebocas en su comunidad?

  7. Sugiera que los estudiantes agreguen más texto a las emociones específicas del libro (alegría, tristeza, enojo, amor y esperanza) 
  8. Sugiera que los estudiantes hagan juegos de roles alrededor de elementos específicos del texto. 
  9. Considere agregar una "actividad de poesía" usando el libro como guía.
